NBA Ref Joe Derosa Suspended For One Game...
In game 2 of the Eastern Conference Finals, at the half, a NBA official had a small altercation with a fan that led to him throwing a basketball at that particular fan. I know what you're thinking, what was a fan and official doing so close to each other in the first place. Well, 53 year old, Joe DeRosa was approaching the scores table to retrieve the warm-ups for him and the other two officials, when a fan began heckling him. Normally, the refs are pretty good with keeping their composure when it comes to fans being foolish. Well I guess DeRosa, felt enough was enough! He decided to take the ball he had in his hands and instead of just placing it down and walking away, he tossed the ball at the fan. DeRosa wanted the fan tossed from the game, but they just moved his seat somewhere else, not to mention, DeRosa started the altercation by tossing the ball at said fan in the first place. Now the toss wasn't reckless or endangering in any way, but the fact still remains, there was a line that was crossed. DeRosa will be suspended for the next game he was scheduled to work without pay. Is this a big deal, well, maybe. This particular event was not violent, it was more to shut the fan up, but if a player had done the same thing, then what would the consequences be? Officials need to be held to the same standard as players on all levels of discipline. I can guarantee you if Garnett, Pierce or Rondo had done the same thing in the same demeanor, they would have been fined and suspended, for one maybe two games.
